Star Party: Messier Marathon - Seven Ponds Astronomy Club
The expo isn't a WAS-led function - it's a multi-club event put together by the Seven Ponds Astronomy Club near Lapeer - but many of us will be there. We'll be able to stay all night (which you'll need to do to complete the Messier Catalog), but we have to leave by 8 AM. You can bring a sleeping bag or cot if you'd like to nap over the course of the night. PLEASE get there before dark so you don't disrupt anybody's night vision. Is this your first Messier Marathon? Meeting and Presentation: "The Milky Way: Would You Be My Neighbor?"
The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the third Thursday in room 221 of Building J at Macomb Community College's South Campus. We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members. Larry Phipps, former W.A.S. publications director and talented multimedia presenter, will present a tribute to our galaxy, the Milky Way, entitled "Would You Be My Neighbor?" Larry's past talks to our club have included "10 Greatest Astronomical Discoveries of the Last 35 Years," "Tube-hopping on the Interplanetary Superhighway," "Hubble Photos," "MESSENGER Report," "Arp's Catalogue Of Peculiar Galaxies Revisited," "Wardriving with Kitchenware," "2006: That Was The Year That WAS," and "Of Belts and Clouds." Larry sends the following information about himself and his topic: "As a Recreation Therapist for over 25 years, part of my job entails helping others discover leisure and recreation activities that may help them to better meet their needs, as well as improve their quality of life. "Astronomy is an excellent example of an activity that can meet a variety of needs. It is intellectually stimulating, provides opportunity for social interaction, and offers an infinity of choices for being a spectator of the greatest show in the universe." "My presentation at MCC on the Milky Way taps into my creative side as I will share information about observers and researchers, evolution, physical and chemical structure, and the future of our galaxy, in an interesting and creative way." The views expressed in presentations are those of the speakers and do not necessarily represent, and should not be attributed to, the Warren Astronomical Society.

SPECIAL EVENT: Hubble 3D @ Henry Ford IMAX
Please join the Warren Astronomical Society for this special event held at the IMAX Theatre at The Henry Ford complex in Dearborn. Bring your family and friends - this will be a great event for all ages! Hubble 3D focuses exclusively on the last servicing mission and stars Lake Orion astronaut Andrew "Drew" Feustel and his crewmates aboard the Atlantis. Leonardo DiCaprio narrates. Expect stunning 3D visuals from the mission, which took place at a far higher orbit than the usual shuttle destination of the ISS. Nobody's going to see the Earth like this again for a long, long time! Check out the trailer here. The regular price for an IMAX show is $10. If we have fifteen or more attendees, we can get tickets for $9 per person ($8.00 for age 62+, $7.75 for kids 12 and under). Since we don't want to risk buying a large batch of tickets at the last minute, you must RSVP at least seven days in advance to get the discounted rate. RSVPs close at noon on Friday, March 12. If you miss the RSVP deadline, please feel free to buy tickets on your own and meet up with the group. We are planning to get dinner before the show at 5:30 PM at: Buddy's Pizza 22148 Michigan Avenue Dearborn, MI 48124-2205

Neighborhood Beat in Warren- March 23!
The Creative Energy Alliance invites you to a new kind of Unconditional Networking Event! The Beat! We believe that building a good community starts with being a Good Neighbor! And if we're going to make things happen, it's going to happen at the GRASS ROOTS level- right in our own neighborhoods. So this first "Beat" focuses on one area of Detroit, as we bring our creative friends together for some powerful Unconditional Networking, great local music and good times! Look for more Beats soon- in YOUR Neighborhood! This event will be hosted at The Beat Cafe- "an espresso joint", located at 29200 Hoover Rd, just North of 12 Mile. The event starts at 6pm, so you can drop in after work- 'til 10pm. There is a suggested donation of only $5 at the door, and a portion of proceeds from coffee, drinks and food purchases will go to benefit a local charity, the Goodfellows of Warren and Sterling Heights Food Drive, so if you'd like to bring a donation in cans of food or "non-perishable goods", we will gladly accept them. Masseusse Susan Valenti CMT will be there with her cool massage chair- to provide her unique massage. A portion of her proceeds will also go to benefit the Goodfellows. We'll have our cool "Mindmap" up on the wall, like we did at the CEA Christmas party! Come put yourself on the creative map of Detroit- literally! We're also planning a raffle for some fun prizes and of course, we'll have some of Detroit's hottest talent from all corners of our creative universe. If you've been to a CEA party, you know we have a great time- and always try to feature local talent! We love to promote local bands and musicians and there is no music in the world like homegrown Michigan Music! For this Beat, we've found you some great local musicians who will be performing, coffee house style! So come in, sit back with a beverage or snack from The Beat Cafe's wide selection, from in-house, fresh-roasted coffee, herbal teas, a simple hot cocoa or a (creative) energy drink! Featured Music Acts: - Ramsey* - The Michael Balos Duo - Morgan Lorkowski - Joe Pop - Judy Moon and the Moon Spirit Band* * These fine musicians appearing courtesy of JENN Entertainment! Stargate Observatory Open House
It's our mostly-monthly public open house: you get to use our equipment and our volunteers' knowledge to see what's out there in the sky tonight. We usually stay as long as the skies are clear and there are interested observers - usually around midnight, but on nice nights even later. You don't have to stay the whole time - though we ask that you aim your headlights away from the observing field in case you have to leave early. Feel free to email us if you have any questions. We only require a few things for your safety and enjoyment: Astronomical twilight will begin around 8 PM, so please plan to be at the observatory earlier. Be careful with headlights on your way in, especially after sundown. Make sure to turn the dome lights off if possible, and park your car facing away from the observing field if you have running lights. Please don't use white light flashlights when others are observing. Others will have flashlights, but if you'd like to bring your own, you can easily make a red-light flashlight that will help you get around in the dark and is safe for night vision. You can read ideas here. No alcoholic beverages are permitted. Other advice to help you make the most of your evening: Weather, especially in Michigan, is unpredictable. We are always (some might say irrationally) hopeful, but if there's a solid chance of an extended downpour we are not likely to do any observing! If you're not sure about the weather, call Bob Berta, Marty Kunz, or Jonathan Kade to check if the open house has been canceled. Observing is an outside activity, so dress accordingly - a little warmer than the temperature would indicate. Even in the summer, it can get surprisingly chilly at night. Like any other activity, the key to lasting is layers, layers, layers! In the wintertime and early spring, plan to wear at least two layers of every garment: socks, pants, and a shirt. Core temperature is important too, so pay extra attention to keeping your torso warm - an insulated vest can work wonders. In the winter months, it pays to have a thermos of a warm beverage. Coffee has its drawbacks; less-caffeinated drinks like tea and hot cocoa can be more enjoyable. Die-hard observers who need to keep warm have been known to drink hot liquid gelatin - it keeps one very warm, at the cost of only a few taste buds. We are currently offering the observatory as a warm room, so if it's too chilly outside you can warm up for a bit inside. We use a member's propane heater when is is available and normal ceramic space heaters otherwise, so we can only get the temperature up to around 30 degrees over the outside temperature - not bad if it's 30F outside, rather cold if it's 2F. Importantly, the Camp Rotary grounds have full-service public restrooms, with warm running water and other modern conveniences. If there's something specific you'd like to see, we'll do our best to make it happen. We have safe, filtered solar telescopes to look at the sun in amazing detail before it gets dark; if you're interested in seeing our local star, let us know and we'll try to make a telescope available.

Mtg and Presentation: "The Cassini Mission: Discovering Saturn and Its Moons"
The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the first Monday of every month in the auditorium at Cranbrook Institute of Science. We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members. Stephen Uitti will be our speaker at the WAS meeting at Cranbrook on April 5, 2010. His topic is the Cassini mission to Saturn. He sends the following information about himself and his subject. Stephen ("Steve") Uitti ("Witty") is a software engineer and holds a bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering. He writes software for a living (go figure). He has been an active member of the WAS for about a decade, and is the current Director of Publications. He frequently participates in outreach events. He has given a variety of talks, most recently, "Alien Universe", featuring weird things that have come from thinking about Black Holes, including the Holographic Principal. A member of the Ford Amateur Astronomy Club as well, he is part of a group that produces the monthly half hour video program called "Astronomy For Everyone", shown on cable TV on the public access channel for many Southeast Michigan towns. A talk about String Theory - Strings - has been abandoned. There seems to be too little material that is accessible to a group at our level. Instead we'll look at the Cassini spacecraft, which has been orbiting Saturn for years. We'll see pretty pictures and what has been discovered so far. We'll delve into the plans for the extended mission. The views expressed in presentations are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of the Warren Astronomical Society.

The Town of Warren Massachusetts was founded in 1834 and is located in Worcester County.

Warren contains about 5000 year round residents.

Warren seems to attract many previous city dwellers that commute to work in Worcester or Springfield and return to this peaceful community at the end of the day.
